1. Scarlett Jo talks music with Spin Magazine.
2. Elle Decor let us inside Beth Rudin Dewoody's home. (This was one of the most interesting art collections I have ever seen.)

Jackie O And A Leopard Throw

I was going through my "archives" (a.k.a. my massive collection of ephemera and magazine clippings) and found this photograph from an old Architectural Digest. It's of Jackie Kennedy's sitting room in the White House. I love this picture. The perfect soothing shade of lady-like blue covers the walls, curtains, and upholstery, but it's the informal quality of the room that I love to imagine First Lady Jackie relaxing in: the black and white photos tucked into the vanity, the blue goblet of pencils, and the daisies. And there is something so fantastic about the leopard print in combination with the powder blue. It's where sass meets demure. It's very Jackie.

Ooh La La Amelie

Style inspired by the film Amelie. I couldn't find the perfect gnome, but I did track down the the artwork from Amelie's bedroom by German painter Michael Sowa. Art.com has the "Film Hog" painting (the dog with the cone), as well as the "Fowl With Pearls" painting and the "Bear" painting which were all featured in the film. And he has a book, An Enchanted Bestiary, which can be purchased on amazon.com.

Tour of Homes

Today I Went on the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation's Spring Tour of Homes which focused on 7 homes built by Athens architect Frederick J. Orr between 1910 and 1930.
There was something so awkward and voyeuristic about wandering around someone's home taking pictures of their stuff, even if it was a tour. Anyway, the homes were beautiful, and I took some photos for inspiration. Click to enlarge them.

Heroine Chic

The May issue of Vogue (with Gweneth Paltrow on the cover), features a few super hero themed fashion shoots. These include the woman version of Clarke Kent, newspaper office and all, in tortoise shell glasses and pencil skirts, and also couture wearing comic heroes like Catwoman, and Marvel Comic's Little Mermaid in a Jean Paul Gautier rubber body suit (see photos below). I always get so excited when Vogue does these fantasy inspired themes with incredibly beautiful photography. Whether it's Alice in Wonderland or The Wizard of Oz the clothes always become moving art when incorporated into a narrative. And what is great fashion if not fantasy?

Accelerate In Black and White

R.E.M's epic new album Accelerate is definitely worth mentioning this month.
Like the music, the album's artwork and design are fresh and volcanic. I caught a bit of the interviews with the band on CBS's Sunday Morning and watched Michael explain the making of the graphic panoramic cityscapes that cover the album insert. They are made of xerox copies that were then cut and paste to form one long view (I scanned them in, click below to view it bigger). It's a nice reminder of the band's talent on many artistic levels. Skip the digital version, the packaging is worth it.

Holly Golightly

No one could make a bath tub look as glam as Holly Golightly in the film Breakfast at Tiffany's. Her studio apartment was perfectly furnished for a party, as in hardly any furniture at all, and had just a vanity (every surface covered with perfume), an iron bed, and a sawed-in-half bathtub with a purple cushion seat. Old crates served as extra seating and tables, and suitcases were every corner, as if any second she could pack up and go. There were all these little oddities around the apartment as well, like a giant weather vane, a life-size donkey with fruit baskets, and a pinata- all probably remnants from parties. The apartment was nomadic, quirky, and still somehow chic- a perfect reflection of Holly Golightly.

The New York Public Library has a fantastic website with thousands of scans from books and other documents, and all are public domain. My latest favorites in the database are scans of American song sheet covers. The early twentieth century graphic designs are so inspiring, and the song titles are almost always cheeky. For example: "If You Don't Want My Peaches, You Better Stop Shakin the Tree".

1. Tracey Emin, Works 1963/2006
Raw and beautiful, her work is literally her diary. And when I look through this book I feel both completely uncomfortable (the best work always makes me feel uncomfortable), and incredibly inspired.
Big beautifully designed retrospective. 10x13 inches, 416pgs.

2. The Polaroid Book

This book is compact and perfect just like it's subject. 7x9inches, 400pgs.

3. Dana Schutz, Paintings 2002-2005
Amazing painter whose large-scale paintings use color unlike anyone else. She has this made-up character, Frank, that she paints in different environments and poses. I find him completely creepy... and awesome.
This is her first book. 8.5x11 inches, 94pgs.

4. Hans Bellmer
Beautiful and always pervy. I find the photographs of his homemade dolls (la poupee) so scary but in undeniably influential. (more about Hans to come)
